Workbook #6 Joanna Lopez

HSM 203 Professor Toni Foy May, 2013 Workbook #6 As a future Social worker, it is important to learn to deal with people who are grieving. Indeed, it is likely that I will someday have a client who i have to help with the grieving process. This week's workbook question discusses about a client who shares with me that his ago has been hit by a car and he begins to cry. If that was the situation, the first thing I will do is give him a few minutes to breath and then I will begin to ask him about the dog which seems to be very important to my client. It is likely that the dog passed away so I must be very empathic and show the client support. It is obvious that my client is suffering over the fact that his puppy is hurt or passed away. Though I have never experienced loosing someone close to me, I must be understanding towards the client's feelings. I must put myself in his/her shoes and try my best to understand his emotions so that I can provide the appropriate help. I believe it's very important to let the client cry. Telling the client to stop crying might make him/her feel I am brushing off his issues. He/she might feel that I don't want to hear what is happening in his/her life. This will not become a successful therapeutic relationship. It is important to make the client feel comfortable so that he can share whatever it is that is bothering him with me.

  1. I believe your method of therapy is awesome, the client should feel comfortable and have confidence while talking in therapy. The part when you say to let the client cry is the best, because if you don't you will make them feel like brushing off their issues. You are showing professionalism and confidence which that's great. If i was to recommend you a therapy method, will be musical therapy in situations like this it can be helpful for the client it helps release less stress and anxiety and let helps the mind loosing up and accept some stuff. For my Hsc130 class we use music therapy for many things, papers, and to visualize a client.
